Janice Watson

Janice has performed in most of the major Opera houses of the world, Including Covent Garden, Metropolitan Opera New York, Chicago, Santa Fe, San Francisco, Vienna, Paris, Lyon, Amsterdam, Berlin, Hamburg, La Scala Milan, Naples, Turin, Sydney, Beijing, Tokyo, and has been a regular guest at both Welsh National Opera and English National Opera.  She has sung many times at the Royal Albert Hall Proms and the Edinburgh Festival. Conductors she has worked with include Riccardo Chailly, Richard Hickox, Neeme Yärvi, Franz Welser-Möst, Gustavo Dudamel, Kurt Masur, Mark Elder, Donald Runnicles, Martin Brabbins and a collection of musical Knights Sir Charles Mackerras, Bernard Haitink, Anthony Pappano, Colin Davis, Andrew Davis, and Andre Previn KBE.

Roles Include; Countess [Nozze di Figaro]  Ellen Orford, Arrabella, Daphne, Musetta Katja Kabanova, Jenufa, Salome, Marschellin,  Blanche and Stella [Streetcar Named Desire], Ariadne, Alice Ford, Leonore, Elizabetta, [Don Carlos], Elsa [Lohengrin], Elizabeth [Tannhäuser], Cio-Cio-san [Madame Butterfly], Pamina, Vitellia, Liu, Madame Lidoine [Dialogue of the Carmelites], Electra [Idomeneo], Adele [Comte Ory], Lucia [Lucia di Lammermoor], and many more, including a large amount of concert repertoire.

Janice has also done many recordings.  Her performance of Ellen Orford in Pater Grimes for Chandos with Richard Hickox and the LSO won her a Grammy award and she has received two further nominations. Other recordings include Elizabeth [Don Carlos], Jenufa for Chandos, A poisoned Kiss, Owen Wingrave, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Dvorak Stabat Mater and Te Deum and Beethoven Missa Solemnis & Ah Perfido, Bernard Hermann’s ‘Citizen Cane’-Saalambo’s Aria, Poulenc Gloria and Stabat Mater, songs by Liza Lehmann, Haydn Masses no 6 and 12.  Her recording of the Delius Mass of Life was CD of the week both on Radio 3 and in Gramophone Magazine.

Concert work includes Britten Spring Symphony, Dvorak Glagolitic Mass, Verdi Requiem, Mahler Symphony No. 8 and Vaughan Williams’ Sea Symphony.  Janice has also recorded Strauss 4 last songs, William Walton’s Façade, and the Mozart Requiem and Mass in C Minor.  Janice also won the Kathleen Ferrier singing competition and the Royal Overseas League Gold Medal making her the Commonwealth Musician of the year 1987.  In recent years Janice has moved some of her work to teaching and has been an adjudicator for the Royal College of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.  Janice also is an external examiner for the Royal College of Music.   Janice currently teaches at Dauntsey’s School and at Chichester University where she teaches Music Theatre and Classical singing.
